Several members of the Pagosa Lakes Porpoises swim team traveled to Delta last weekend for a one-day meet and a backstroke clinic with a former U.S.A. Olympian, B.J. Miller. The Delta Barracudas hosted this mixed-season opener after completion of the Special Olympic Regional meet.
James Berndt walked away with two second-place medals — in the 50 meter butterfly (44.75 seconds) and 50 backstroke (42.53). His personal best in the 50 freestyle of 34.23 earned him a fifth-place ribbon.
The competition was tough against the other swim teams, but Pagosa relays consisting of Erin and Devan Monkiewicz, Blake Irons and Owen Sutton edged out their opponents at the wall. Sutton, the anchorman in the 200 free relay, turned on his speed in the last 10 yards for the victory.
Erin Monkiewicz took a first-place medal in the 25 free with a personal best of 18.08, which automatically qualifies her to swim in the Summer Club championship later this summer. She also took second place in the 25 breaststroke, shedding over three seconds.
Blake Irons, who made his first official swim appearance this year, produced huge results in his times. He had a personal best in all of his events — the 50 free, 50 breaststroke and 100 individual medley. Devan Monkiewicz continues to drop times in all of his events as well, and finished a second behind Blake in the 50 free and 100 IM.
Zack Irons swam the 100-yard freestyle for a solid fourth place finish, with a time of 1:20.12.
This Saturday, the Pagosa Lakes Porpoises will host a Sprint Eliminator Meet at the Pagosa Lakes Recreation Center at 8 a.m. Come out and see what the swim team is all about. If you have questions, contact Steve Williams at 903-1432.
