The Pagosa Lakes Porpoises swim team competed at the Durango Spring Invitational last weekend. Pagosa finished fourth out of nine teams. This was the Pagosa Porpoises’ first meet of the summer season.
Devan led the Porpoises with two first-place finishes — in the 9-10 boys 200-meter individual medley and the 400 freestyle.
Erin Monkiewicz earned first place in the 8 and under 50 breaststroke.
Katie Armbrecht finished first in the 13-14 girls 100 free.
The Porpoises nearly swept the 9-10 boys 400 free with second through fifth going to Joey Berndt, Kyle Mundy, R.J. Hernandez and Marcus Mazzola.
Participating in their first meet for the Porpoises were Halle Loveday, Owen Murrell and Owen Sutton. Kyle Mundy had his best meet so far finishing right behind Devan in three events. Also scoring points for the team were Skyler McIver and Makayla Garcia, both of whom just moved into the 9-10 girls age group. Not to be forgotten was James Berndt who swam his first meet in the 11-12 boys age group. James had a second in the 400 freestyle, a third place in the 50 freestyle, and three fourth-place finishes.
The next competition for the Porpoises will be the Delta Short Course Meet on May 2.
