Gene was born on Oct. 7, 1938, as Eugene Crabtree in Monessen, Pa. He began his leadership skills in the Boy Scouts as head of the Order of the Arrow. He graduated from Eastern New Mexico University with a degree in education and began influencing the lives of thousands in his career as teacher, coach and administrator at Albuquerque High School.
More than once Gene traveled to Africa to volunteer his time as a physical education coach. Gene and his wife moved to Pagosa Springs in 1991 and managed family ranches there until 2008.
