There is still time for bowling teams to register to participate in Pagosa Springs’ 2009 Bowl for Kids’ Sake. The celebration takes place Saturday, May 2, at the Power House Youth Center in downtown Pagosa Springs.
Bowl for Kids’ Sake is Big Brothers Big Sisters of southwest Colorado’s only annual fund-raising campaign for the Pagosa Springs program. The campaign culminates in a community-wide bowling event — a party held to thank the members of the community for coming through for the kids. While the event will take place in a unique “bowling alley” created for just one day, it’s not really about bowling, it’s about taking part in a fun activity to help local kids in need.
It’s easy to get involved. As a team captain, gather three additional friends, family members or colleagues to be your team members. You and your team will have a great time while raising money to help the children who are served by the local Big Brothers Big Sisters (BBBS) agency. Register your team at Pagosa.Kintera.org and then you will be able e-mail friends and family and ask them to make an easy but secure online donation. Or you can use a paper pledge sheet to solicit funds for the cause. Challenge others to friendly fund-raising competitions and see who can raise the most money ahead of the event. When you arrive with your team on May 2, you will hand in your contributions and pledges, pick up a complimentary T-shirt, and have a blast at the party designed to thank you for all you’ve done for BBBS.
There will also be live music — featuring John Graves, Carl Mori, Brooks Lindner, Danny Appenzeller, Pam Novak, Bill Hudson and Jack Ellis — and a silent auction. Proceeds from the silent auction will be divided between the Southwest Colorado ASA Girls Softball Association, the new Youth Center and Big Brothers Big Sisters. So, even if you are not able to bowl with us, please stop by and support these great organizations by bidding on the silent auction. The new Youth Center will also be providing food during the event.
Teams should register at Pagosa.Kintera.org or contact Stacia Kemp at 264-5077 or firstname.lastname@example.org to reserve a bowling time. Each individual bowler/team member is asked to raise at least $80 (or $320 for a team). If you are unable to form a team, but would like to support BBBS, you can easily make a secure online donation at the Pagosa.Kintera.org site or you can mail a check to P.O. Box 2488, Pagosa Springs, CO 81147.
Revenues from BFKS make up the operating budget for BBBS. All money raised goes directly to support a match between a caring, adult role model (“Big”) and a local child between the ages of 6 and 17 (“Little”). In the past two years, the BBBS program has grown by 57 percent in Archuleta County and has successfully matched more kids with caring adult mentors than ever before. The goal of BBBS is to help as many children in the community as possible by matching them with volunteers who can be a consistent, positive influence in their lives. We want to change how some children grow up in Pagosa and the support of our community for Bowl for Kids’ Sake is essential for that to happen.
Big Brothers Big Sisters has significantly impacted more than 100 kids in Pagosa Springs and Archuleta County since 2000. National research shows that BBBS makes a difference in the lives of the children who participate in the program. They are 46 percent less likely to use drugs, 27 percent less likely to start drinking and 52 percent less likely to skip school. They are also 33 percent less likely to engage in violence. The program has been listed among the top violence prevention programs in the United States.
