Youth basketball division winners announced

Monday marked the end of this year’s youth basketball seasons for ages 9-12, and the recreation department staff extends congratulations to the 9-10 Columbia team and 11-12 Navy team for earning first-place honors.

We would also like to recognize this year’s volunteer coaches and sponsors, whose generous contributions of time and resources once again made an enjoyable season a reality.

In the 9-10 division, we thank coaches Todd Miller, Craig Vrazel, Terry Schaaf, Kim and Allen Thompson, Derek Lamoreaux, Joseph Garcia, Allen Gregg, Brian Griego, Tim Miller, Nate Bryant, April Lucero and Berklee Ruthardt.

Sponsors for the 9-10 division included Pagosa Springs Sports Medicine, Honda Hauls LLC, Design A Sign, Joseph Garcia (The Barber, at Ray’s), Allen’s Auto Body and Cat Creek Trucking.

In the 11-12 division, we recognize coaches Ed Furtaw, Andy Rice, Tim Miller, Jerry Smith, Berklee Ruthardt, April Lucero, Dave Close, Kelly and Dylan Laner, David Snarr, and Bill and Lori Manzanares.

Sponsors for the 11-12 division included Family Dollar, Timothy Miller Custom Homes, Design A Sign, ReSport and Trading Post Repair.

In addition to coaches and sponsors, another key ingredient to the success of all recreation programming is the support from participants, and we would like to thank all of the players and their parents and guardians who made positive contributions to this year’s leagues. As administrators, we recognize that participation in youth sports programs inevitably requires navigation of a few speed bumps, despite the best of intentions and planning.

So, for those who took false fire alarms, hectic schedules, late game times and the occasional missed call in stride — thanks again for your exemplary sportsmanship, patience and support.

Tee-ball

The Town of Pagosa Springs Recreation Department is accepting registrations for this year’s tee-ball league beginning Wednesday, March 18.

Registration deadline for this year’s season is April 1. Any child who will be 5 or 6 years old as of April 1 is eligible to participate.

Registrations are available at the recreation office in Town Hall and have been dispersed to local schools next week.

Registrations are also available for download in Adobe format through the recreation department link at www.townofpagosasprings.com.

Cost is $30 per player and $15 for each additional child in the same, immediate family who participates. The season is tentatively scheduled to begin in early April.

Coaches and sponsorships for this year’s tee-ball teams are also needed and appreciated. Cost for sponsorship is $150, which includes sponsor’s name on team uniforms, commemorative plaque with team picture, and designation on season banners and in media articles.

For more information, call the recreation office 264-4151, Ext. 231 or 232.

Adult basketball

Adult basketball schedules are available at the recreation office and on the recreation department page at www.townofpagosasprings.com. The season will run through mid-April.

Rosters may carry as many as 15 players; players are eligible to participate if they were 16 years of age or older as of March 1. Players may be added to the roster at any time throughout the season, but participants who have not paid the $30 player fee before the start of their second game will not be permitted to play.

Call the recreation office at 264-4151, Ext. 231, for more information.

Indoor soccer

Due to scheduling conflicts, indoor soccer at the community center has been canceled; play is tentatively scheduled to resume outdoors in April, weather and field conditions permitting.

For more information on this program, contact Matt Bowdridge at 903-8663, or call the recreation office at 264-4151, Ext. 232.

Tree recycling

The Town of Pagosa Springs is conducting a Christmas tree recycling program. Anyone wishing to participate in this program can take trees to be recycled to South Pagosa Park on South 8th Street between now and the end of the month.

Look for the signs directing recyclers to the collection area. To ensure that trees can be properly recycled, please remove all lights and ornaments before leaving your tree.

The parks department will chip the collected trees into mulch to be used for landscaping projects during the coming season.

Fireworks donations

The recreation department is accepting donations for this year’s Fourth of July fireworks show.

Donations in any amount will be accepted; checks and money orders should be made payable to Town of Pagosa Springs.

Donations should be addressed “Attention: Fireworks” and mailed to P.O. Box 1859, Pagosa Springs, CO 81147. If you would like to make a cash donation, please do so in person at the front desk in Town Hall.
