Little Porpoises produce big results

Last Saturday, the Pagosa Porpoises 8 and under swimmers splashed their way through a meet held in Durango.

This was an introductory meet for swimmers under the age of 8 in a competitive setting.

Highlights from the meet were a first-place finish and personal best by Bret Mundy in the 25-yard freestyle, with a time of 26.21 seconds.

Owen Murrell had an impressive fourth-place finish in the 25-yard backstroke and butterfly. This was his first appearance in a meet.

Seasoned swimmer Makayla Garcia gave the Durango and Farmington swimmers excellent races in the backstroke and 50 yard freestyle.

Erin Monkiewicz had a close race in the 100 IM, being edged out for second place by eight-tenths of a second. She also took second place in the 50-yard freestyle and third in the 25-yard breaststroke.

First-time swimmer Halle Loveday had outstanding swims in the 25 back and 25 free, with a personal best of 32.12. She also contributed to the two relays in which the Porpoise girls were entered.

The swim team is just now getting under way with practices held at the Pagosa Lakes Recreation Center from 4 to 5 p.m. Monday through Thursday.
