Drue G. Hartong, a long-time Chromo resident, died on February 3, 2009, after a long battle with cancer. She was 86 years old, born to Ben and Olivia Gardner on August 26, 1922. She began her ranching career in 1936 when her family moved to Chromo from Plainview, Texas. They raised sheep and it wasn’t until 1954 that she and her husband (Chuck) started raising Hereford cattle.
She was working for United Airlines when she met her husband, Herman C. (Chuck) Hartong, who was also working for the company. They married on April 12, 1947, in San Carlos, California.
She worked at various government agencies in Pagosa Springs until retiring from ASCS in the early 1980s. She was instrumental in bringing the Ruby Sisson Library to the Pagosa area. Her favorite hobbies included making beautiful dolls and teddy bears for both family and friends. She had a passion for reading and read everything she could get her hands on. She loved playing solitaire in the mornings after breakfast and wouldn’t quit until she won a hand.
Mrs. Hartong is survived by her children, Charles Hartong and wife Denise of Irving, Texas, Karen Hartong of Ignacio, Ron Hartong of Chromo, granddaughter Karen Hayes and husband Keith of Southlake, Texas, and two great grandchildren, Hayden and Tatum.
Cremation has occurred and a family memorial service will be held at a later date. The family requests that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the Pagosa Mountain Hospital at 95 S. Pagosa Blvd., Pagosa Springs, Colorado 81147.
