Work begins on high school spring production

Casting is complete for the Pagosa springs High School’s spectacular spring musical event — “West Side Story,” by Leonard Bernstein and Stephen Sondheim.

A classic modern Romeo and Juliet tale set on the West Side of New York City in the late ’50s, the Broadway production was made into a movie in 1961, and quickly established the musical as a household name.

Our production, with more than 40 students, plus a crew of more than two dozen, has already begun rehearsals, and designs of sets, costumes, lights and sound are underway.

Dan Burch is our musical director, with Kathleen Isberg and Venita Burch working as accompanists and vocal coaches. Sally Neel will be assisting with vocals. Bill and Julie Reardon will be mentoring students with sets and costumes. Our student soundmaster is Kayla Hunt, with lighting design by Jacob Haynes. Josie Snow is our student head costumer. Dale Morris is the director and choreographer, assisted by several assistant choreography students. Pagosa Springs Music Boosters provides mentoring opportunities and assistance in all production areas.

“West Side Story” will premiere in mid-April.
