Continuing to dominate in the four-corners area, the Pirate girls’ varsity basketball team scored a stunning victory in Del Norte on Tuesday night against the Tigers.
Sophomore phenoms Mary Brinton and Breezy Bryant dazzled again, scoring 12 points each, with Brinton also blocking eight shots and getting nine rebounds. Senior Allison Hart led scoring with 13 points (as well as six rebounds), while junior Victoria Espinosa scored 9 points.
Outscoring the Tigers 15-10 in the first quarter, coach Wes Lewis said the Pirates weren’t able to gel on defense until the next period.
“We started putting a game plan together for Bayfield and only had one practice to prepare for Del Norte,” said Lewis. “We had to change up our defense in the first half.”
After making their defensive shift, the Pirates held the Tigers to a single point in the second quarter, outscoring Del Norte 9-1 in the period, exiting the first half with a 24-11 lead.
Dominating again in the third period, the Pirates outscored Del Norte 20-7, expanding their lead to 26 points, going into the final quarter ahead 44-18.
Outscored by a single point in the fourth quarter, 11-12, the Pirates were in no danger of losing their advantage, beating Del Norte 55-30 and improving to a 6-4 record overall.
Looking ahead to tomorrow’s conference game against Bayfield, Lewis said, “Bayfield is a tough 8-3 team. We need to execute our game plan and focus on defense. We need to limit their fast-break points, their second-chance points, and limit our turnovers.”
The Pirates play in Bayfield at 5:30 p.m., hoping to improve their conference record to 2-1. The girls will host the Salida Spartans at 5:30 p.m. on Tuesday in the PSHS gymnasium. Although the Pirates beat the Spartans earlier this month, Lewis remains cautious about the Pirate’s chances against a strong 4A team.
“They’re still a good basketball team,” he said.
