San Juan Outdoor Club 2008 scholarship applications are now available to eligible high school seniors.
Applications can be picked up at the office of counselor Mark Thompson at Pagosa Springs High School.
Completed applications are due by March 25.
The San Juan Outdoor Club (SJOC) was established to provide outdoor recreational and service opportunities for its members, including hiking, cross country and downhill skiing, bicycling, camping, four-wheel drive explorations and similar activities. In addition, the club provides education and training to enhance these activities.
The scholarship program was created in 2000 as an extension of the club’s mission to protect and maintain the environment, as well as to educate and involve community members in outdoor recreational opportunities. Scholarships are financed through SJOC fund-raising activities, including the Ski and Sports Swap and members’ contributions. Four $1,000 scholarships were awarded in 2008. The winners were Chance Adams, Dan Cammack, Patrick Ford and Brad Iverson.
Scholarship applicants must be registered at, and attend, an accredited college or university within the next year.
Each applicant must meet scholarship requirements, write an essay around the theme of contributing to the community and the environment, provide letters of recommendation and be interviewed by the SJOC scholarship committee. Committee members this year are Sara Scott, Cindy Quigley and Charleen Stipe (chair).
The scholarship winners will be introduced to the SJOC at the club’s June meeting.
