The Four Corners Office for Resource Efficiency (4CORE) has received new funding, a $25,000 matching grant, from the Colorado state Governor’s Energy Office (GEO), supporting the “Insulate Colorado” program.
4CORE is offering one-time “Insulate Colorado” rebates — covering 20 percent of the total cost of insulation and/or air sealing costs, or $300 — whichever is less — to homeowners in La Plata, Archuleta and parts of San Juan, Hinsdale and Mineral counties. Rebates are available for primary, secondary or rental units, and granted on a first-come, first-served basis.
“The easiest thing we all can do to save money and help mitigate the demand for more power generation is to conserve, and with our homes that translates to sealing, insulating and adding weatherization,” said Aileen Tracy, 4CORE executive director. “Builders and architects refer to it as ‘sealing the envelope’ or making your home’s structure as energy efficient as possible.”
According to Tracy, improving attic insulation tops the list for increasing a home’s energy efficiency, potentially reducing heating costs 20 to 30 percent, depending on the type of insulation and sealing techniques utilized. Wall insulation furthers utility bill reduction, improves comfort and helps the environment, she said.
Work must be completed by a GEO-trained and approved contractor (a list of which is available on the 4CORE Web site, www.fourcore.org). Do-it-yourself upgrade projects are not eligible. Copies of all contractor invoices and completed “Description of Insulation Sheet” must be submitted with the application.
“With the economic slowdown, this is a good opportunity for contractors to participate in the GEO training,” said Tracy, encouraging insulation contractors to contact her directly for information. “As part of Colorado’s New Energy Economy, we will likely see more energy efficiency rebate programs in the future. Contractors will need to be GEO-trained to take advantage of the opportunities.”
Applications for the “Insulate Colorado” rebate are available for download at www.fourcore.org, or call 259-1916 with questions, or to receive an application via the mail. Return completed forms to 4CORE Insulate Colorado Program, 10 Town Plaza, #190, Durango, CO 81301.
