Now that winter is here, we need to remember that, when the snow falls and piles up on and next to the streets, fire hydrants often become covered and hidden from view.
In order to ensure the fire department can find a hydrant if it is needed, residents should try to help by keeping the hydrant visible from the road during the snowy times.
Most of the hydrants in the area have been fitted with reflective, color-coded tape to assist firefighters in locating the hydrants at night and to quickly determine what the water flow might be from any given hydrant.
Firefighters need to be able to locate and access these valuable resources in a timely manner to mount a quick attack on a fire in a home or business.
Firefighters of the Pagosa Fire Protection District thank everyone for their assistance in keeping fire hydrants visible by removing the snow that covers and surrounds them.
