Registration open for 9-12 basketball

Registration for this year’s 9- and 10-year-old and 11- and 12-year-old youth basketball leagues will run through Wednesday, Dec. 17.

Children who will be 9, 10, 11 or 12 years old as of Jan. 1, 2009, are eligible to register. The seasons will not begin until early January.

Registrations are available at the recreation office in Town Hall and are also available online in Adobe format at www.townofpagosasprings.com (click on the town departments link, then the recreation link).

Registrations will also be supplied to local schools; parents are reminded to return completed registrations to the recreation office.

Cost is $25 per player and $15 for each additional child in the same, immediate family who participates. Checks and money orders should be made payable to Town of Pagosa Springs.

Indoor soccer

Anyone interested in playing weekend indoor soccer throughout the winter months is welcome to attend organizational meetings and practice sessions scheduled for Nov. 29 and Dec. 13 from 10 a.m.-noon in the Community Center gymnasium.

This free “pick-up” style program for players age 5-and-over will consist of informal scrimmages, practice and instruction. Non-marking athletic shoes are required; skating shoes are not recommended.

After the first of the year, sessions will be held Saturdays in the Community Center gym when space is available; the season is expected to run through late March or early April.

Indoor soccer balls and goals will be provided; outdoor balls will not be permitted. Shin guards are highly recommended for all participants.

For more information on this program, contact Matt Bowdridge at 903-8663, or call the recreation office at 264-4151, Ext. 232.

Youth volleyball ends

This year’s youth volleyball season ended Nov. 20, and the recreation department staff would like to congratulate the 11-12 Red team and head coach Marky Egan for earning first-place honors in its division.

We would also like to recognize this year’s team sponsors for their generous financial contributions to the program; thanks go out to In Balance Physical Therapy, DR Builders LLC, Pagosa Women’s Health and Wellness, Concrete Connection and Scott Strategic Investments.

In addition, we extend our gratitude to the program’s volunteers, whose dedication was paramount to the success of this year’s season. Without the efforts of Denise Close, Thad Cano, Jen Pitcher, Stacey Lewis, Julie Davey, Pam Lloyd and Robyn Bennett, coordinating a beneficial program would have been nearly impossible.

Equally important to our programs is the support from the participants, and we would like to thank all of this year’s volleyball players and their parents and guardians for contributing to an enjoyable season. As always, thanks again to each of you for your continued sportsmanship, dedication and support.

Coaches and team sponsors for these divisions are needed and appreciated. Cost for sponsorship is $150, which includes sponsor’s name on team uniforms, commemorative plaque with team picture and recognition in media articles.

For more information call 264-4151, Ext. 231 or 232.
