Karl Albert Manthei, age 47, passed away Nov. 2, 2008, in Pagosa Springs, Colo. Karl passed quickly and unexpectedly from a heart attack while at home with his companion, Rebecca Cortez.
Karl is survived by two grown children, Lela and Kale, from his first wife, Laura Hartwig, and six young grandchildren; his parents Margaret and Allen Manthei of Los Alamos, N.M.; and his brother Lee Manthei of Ashburn, Va.
Karl was born, June 23, 1961, in Los Alamos, N.M. He joined the Los Alamos Aquatomics Swim Team as a child and continued swimming competitively throughout his high school years, holding various state records. As an adult, Karl moved to California and entered the field of network computing. He had a talent for computer technology and a passion for cooking. Over the course of Karl’s life, he had careers in both fields.
Having visited Pagosa throughout his life, he always felt a connection to the town, the surrounding mountains, and the people. Karl had an adventurous spirit and a passion for life. He was an intellectual thinker with a big heart. Karl was part of a large spiritual community in Pagosa and will be deeply missed by family and friends. Thank you to everyone who opened their hearts and welcomed Karl into our community.
A celebration of Karl’s life will be held at 1 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 15, 2008, at St. Patrick’s Episcopal Church, followed immediately by a potluck lunch All are welcome to attend.
