Youth soccer complete, photos available

This year’s youth soccer season drew to a close Oct. 14, and the recreation department staff would like to commend the 9-10 Gold team and the 11-12 Gold team for earning first-place accolades in their divisions.

We would also like to recognize The Springs Resort for sponsoring all of this year’s divisions and covering the costs to provide each of our 252 local participants with uniforms this season. The savings resulting from this generous contribution greatly offsets the cost of purchasing program equipment and maintenance supplies.

In addition — and most importantly — we cannot overstate our thanks to all of the volunteer coaches who once again stepped forward to ensure a successful season. Without the exemplary efforts of the volunteers listed hereafter, some of whom assumed coaching responsibilities in two divisions, administering an enjoyable program becomes nearly impossible.

In the 5- and 6-year-old division, we thank Tom Greenly, David Lucero, Chris and Jennifer Pitcher, Darren Lewis, Kody and Jack Hill, Sara Severs, and Cheryl and Matt Bowdridge.

In the 7- and 8-year-old bracket, thanks go out to Shannon Lane, Greg Oertel, Joseph Garcia, Geoff Beserra, Lisa Scott and Karen Ross.

Coaches garnering thanks in the 9- and 10-year-old division include John Britton, Matt and Cheryl Bowdridge, Bobby Hart, Todd Miller, Chris and Jennifer Pitcher, and Steve Koneman.

In the 11- through 12-year-old division, we recognize Jack Searle, Jergen Montgomery and Scott Pierce.

Equally important to the program is the support from the participants, and we would like to thank all of the players and their parents and guardians for contributing to this year’s program.

As always, thanks again to each of you for your continued sportsmanship, dedication and support.

Soccer photos

Coaches and parents who ordered youth soccer photos can contact Jeff Laydon at Pagosa Photography, 264-3686, to check the status of their orders. The recreation office will provide sponsors with team plaques and pictures as soon as they are available.

The recreation staff would also like to thank Mr. Laydon for accommodating another busy schedule during this year’s youth soccer season.

This year marks the 12th year Jeff has offered professional photography service to our programs while donating all of the team photographs used in the commemorative plaques free of charge; thanks again.

Pick-up Pagosa contests

As part of its continuing anti-litter campaign, the Town of Pagosa Springs is inviting local students in grades K-8 to enter the “Pick-up Pagosa Country” poster and essay contests.

Through the end of the month, children in grades K-four can submit entries in the poster contest, while children in grades four-eight can get involved by entering the essay contest.

The theme for entries in the poster contest (grades K-4) is, naturally, “Pick-up Pagosa Country.” Entries should focus on the impacts of litter and/or recycling on our community and should be submitted according to the following general guidelines:

• All entries should be submitted on 8.5x11 paper.

• Any art supplies can be used.

• Neatness, legibility and creativity are essential.

• Artwork must be original and hand-drawn.

• Include student’s name, grade and phone number on the back of entry.

The theme for entries in the essay contest (grades five-eight) is also “Pick-up Pagosa Country.” Entries should explain why local litter prevention and/or recycling efforts are important and should follow these guidelines:

• All entries must be legibly handwritten on 8.5X11 paper.

• Entries are limited to a maximum of 250 words.

• Include student’s name, grade and phone number with entry.

Submissions can be dropped off at the front desk in Town Hall until 5 p.m. Oct. 31. Submissions can also be mailed to: Pick-up Pagosa Country Contest, Town Hall, P.O. Box 1849, Pagosa Springs, CO 81147. Submissions will not be returned.

Prizes will be awarded for first-, second- and third-place entries in each grade. The first-place entries in each grade will be recognized in an upcoming issue of The SUN.
