Arthur “Art” Wilfred Gurule

May 1, 1925 -Oct. 15, 2008.

Arthur was born May 1, 1925, in Frances, Colo., to Juan and Trinidad (Delgado) Gurule. He had two sisters, Ernestine and Betty, and a brother, Mike.

They lost their father during the Great Depression. During this difficult time, Art became a ranch hand and also worked the family ranch at a very young age. He attended school in the Frances area.

In 1945, he married Fedelina Gallegos and they raised five children. He later married Lena Sanchez Archuleta and raised his stepson, Robert Archuleta.

Art was a self-made man, learning to become a diesel and heavy equipment mechanic. He was also a professional truck driver. As a mechanic, he designed custom tools to suit every mechanic’s needs. His skills at welding were well known. As an over-the-road truck driver, he hauled everything from Gene Autry’s horses to Soda Ash products. He loved to reminisce about this truck driving experiences. He also held several trade certificates in accounting and real estate. He enjoyed dancing, fishing, hunting, being outdoors and spending time with his family.

Art and Lena resided in Durango until her passing in December 2005. He then moved to DeBeque, Colo. In October 2006, he moved to the Denver area. After a lengthy battle with diabetes, he passed away peacefully in Castle Rock, Colo., on Oct. 15, 2008.

Art was preceded in death by his wife, Lena, his parents, and his sisters, Betty and Ernestine Martinez; his grandsons, Paul Atencio, Jr. and Arthur G. Gurule; and great-grandsons, Daniel and Gabriel Schmidt.

His is survived by his brother, Mike Gurule, of Redlands, Calif.; his children, Eleanor (Joe) Griego, of Littleton, Colo., Jane Talamante, of Ramah, Colo., Patricia E. Wood, of Parker, Colo., Arthur (Georgia) Gurule, of DeBeque, Colo., Virginia (Clyde) Baker, of Ramah, Colo., and Robert (Patty) Archuleta, of Farmington, N.M.; as well as numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

His passing was a profound loss to his family, friends and all who knew him.

Rosary and visitation were held Oct. 21, 2008, at the Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church, 451 Lewis St., in Pagosa Springs, Colo., beginning at 6 p.m.

Funeral services were held Oct. 22, 2008, at 11 a.m. at St. Frances Church in Frances, Colo.
