Today and tomorrow, Oct. 2 and 3, fire managers at the Pagosa Ranger District will conduct a prescribed burn in the Turkey Springs and Devil Creek areas.
The burn is located seven miles northwest of Pagosa Springs.
The intent is to burn 230 acres in two separate burn units. One unit is located on the Newtjack Road (FSR 923) and the other unit is located on the Monument Park Road (FSR 630). Smoke will be visible from numerous locations north and west of Pagosa.
The burn units were thinned in 2002-2003 as part of the National Fire Plan to reduce hazardous fuels in the Wildland-Urban Interface and improve forest health. The burning will compliment the mechanical fuels reduction/forest health treatment by reducing fuels in a fire-dependent ecosystem, raising crown base heights and recycling nutrients.
Daytime smoke is expected to disperse north and northeast into O’Neal Park, while some nighttime smoke may settle into the Wildflower subdivision and the north end of the Pagosa Lakes subdivision.
For additional information about the proposed burns or other fuels reduction efforts, residents are invited to visit the local San Juan Public Lands office, Pagosa Ranger District, at 180 Pagosa St., or call 264-2268.
