The Pagosa Springs Pirate cross country team made an impressive showing at the Mancos Invitational Saturday, Sept. 27.
Even with stalwarts Katarina Medici and Julia Adams sidelined by illness and injury respectively, the girl’s varsity team finished a strong second overall, behind Mancos.
Girl’s all-state runner Jacie Harms took first place with a time of 21 minutes, 23 seconds. Second across the line on the girl’s team and finishing eighth overall for the race, Rachel Jensen ran a 23:50 time, followed by Crystal Purcell in 10th place at 24:08 and Mele Lelievre with a 24:34 time in 12th place.
Regarding Purcell and Lelievre, Coach Scott Anderson was encouraged, saying, “They both ran well over a minute faster than last week, finishing with their highest placing in a varsity race yet.”
The boy’s varsity team also placed second, just behind the Bayfield team, with all-state standout Jackson Walsh taking second with a time of 17 minutes, 34 seconds. The next three boys’ runners clustered for 10th through 12th places, with Cole Mastin in 10th at 19:07 , Kyle Brookens with a 19:10 in 11th, and Carlos Brinkman at 12th, at 19:20.
“It proved that last week’s closer finish to Bayfield was not a fluke,” said Anderson.
The Pirates will run in Creede on Saturday, Oct. 4, and Anderson stated he’ll keep several of the regular varsity runners out of the race to “let others share the spotlight and give some a rest before league, regional, and then, state meets.”
