Against vacating

Dear Editor:

I have been following the proposed development in Pagosa Springs. Specifically, the vacating of the alley between 6th and 7th Streets and Piedra to Navajo. This alley is basically the crest of the hill and provides one of the best scenic views of the entire town of Pagosa Springs.

I am against the vacating of this alley for two reasons. 1) If vacated the developer will blade the hill down into the river over 6th street, to develop his property. 2)This hill offers what I consider best to be used for the proposed Riverwalk trails.

Recently, a poll was taken as to opinions on the construction of a pedestrian bridge over the river to 6th Street. It seems to be that a lot of discussions have been on-going without making the public aware of what is proposed. I can see no reason to spend over a half-million dollars on a bridge when we have not come up with a clearly defined or approved trail system.

The hill owned by Mr. Adams, who is also on the planning commission, is a topographical site that should not be razed for economic gain. I would like to see a poll taken by the citizens as to where the river trail should be and should the alley be vacated.

I believe there are a lot of questions that need to be asked and answered before a firm decision is made to vacate the alley and should a bridge be constructed. Please send your comments to the Pagosa Springs Planning Department at 264-4151, ext. 225. Thanks.
