Abel Tapia

Dear Editor:

I would like to encourage the citizens of Archuleta County to support Abel Tapia, Democratic candidate for Congressional District 3. Abel will be challenging our current Representative, Scott Tipton, in the Fall. Abel has a truly American life story worthy of a Hollywood movie.

Abel J. Tapia has spent most of his adult life in public service, championing the causes of his hometown, Pueblo, and the third Congressional District. He graduated from Southern Colorado State College with a two-year degree in applied science. He went on to earn a civil engineering degree from Colorado State University, becoming the first member of his family to earn a four-year degree. Motivated to provide for his growing family, he accepted the company’s offer to become superintendent of mining operations at the Allen/Maxwell Mine in Trinidad. In 1985, Tapia founded Abel Engineering Professionals, a multi-disciplinary company with a reputation for excellence unmatched in Southern Colorado. It was listed as one of the top minority-owned businesses and the top 250 Small Businesses in Colorado by Colorado Biz Magazine.

In the early 1990s, Tapia began his long public service career with the Pueblo City Schools Board of Education. In 1997 and 1998, he was chairman of both the Greater Pueblo Chamber of Commerce and the Pueblo Area Council of Governments. In 1998, and then again in 2000, Tapia was elected to the Colorado House of Representatives for District 46. He served on the Legislative Council and was Chairman of the Democratic Caucus and the Latino Caucus. He also served on the Finance and Appropriations Committee. In 2003, he was elected to the Colorado Senate, representing Senate District 3. In the Senate, he served as chairman of the powerful Joint Budget Committee. In 2010, Tapia was hired as director of the Colorado Lottery.

Abel is a family man, with three children who have followed their father’s educational achievement. Sean Tapia, a Colorado University graduate, is a registered architect and the facilities manager for Pueblo County. Leandra Joy Tapia, a Colorado University graduate with an electrical engineering degree, is a financial planner with Northwestern Life Insurance. Sebastian Tapia, a graduate of Colorado University in mechanical engineering and a graduate of Thomas Jefferson School of Law-San Diego, is an attorney for the county of Multnomah (Portland), Ore.

Abel stopped in Pagosa Springs several weeks ago. Those of us who attended his stopover were impressed by his eloquence and his intensity in desiring to serve all of the citizens of the 3rd Congressional District, who would be well served by this experienced and principled gentleman.
