2019/01/obit-madrid-mom-IMG_8208-213x300.jpgDoris Marie (Wade) Wood was born in Houston, Texas, on Jan. 1, 1922, to Joseph Murphy and Agnes Mae (Rogers) Wade and passed away on her 97th birthday here in Pagosa Springs on Jan. 1. She was preceded in death by her parents and four sisters: Beulah Mae Tasker, Jeri Nichols, Gean Soderberg and Betty Ruth Campbell; and her husband, Junior Clarence (Woody) Wood.
Doris told many, many great stories of Houston, Galveston, crabbing in the ocean, dressing up to go “uptown” to the movies and adventurous life stories with four sisters.
She married Junior Clarence (Woody) Wood on Nov. 26, 1948, and they were married for over 60 years. Together, they had three daughters and one son. They moved their family to Pagosa Springs in 1963, where Woody was placed as pastor of the Community United Methodist Church. Doris worked several jobs until buying Pagosa Insurance Company, which she owned for 15 years. Doris loved her sorority, Beta Sigma Phi, which she belonged to for over 40 years. She learned to knit from the experts while working in Aspen, Colo., and knitted until her hands couldn’t knit anymore. She also loved cross-stitching and made over 95 full Christmas stockings for family and friends. She and Woody made ceramics for over 40 years and she loved to oil paint. You could find her and Woody fishing every evening and weekend regardless of the weather!
She leaves behind daughters Judi Valdez (Harold) of Albuquerque, N.M., June Madrid (Butch, deceased), of Pagosa Springs, Colo.; Jo-Anna Valdez (Michael), of Pagosa Springs; and a son, Ken Wood (Carol), of Olathe, Colo. She leaves 11 grandchildren: Tracie Castillo, Long Beach, Calif.; Dwayne Valdez (Alisha) Denver, Colo.; Edward Madrid, Phoenix, Ariz.; Rich Valdez (Davilyn), Pagosa Springs, Colo.; Phillip Valdez, Pagosa Springs, Colo.), Bobbie Valdez (Erica), Animas, N.M.; Shelli Irizarry (Ryan) Albuquerque, N.M.; Mikela Valdez, Houston, Texas; Danny Wood (Andrea), Olathe, Colo.; Bradley Wood, Olathe, Colo.; and Kendra Wood, Olathe, Colo. She was very proud of the great-grandchildren: Cameron Castillo, Whitney Andres, Brittany Valdez, Kaylie Castillo, Hayley Valdez, Gracie Andres, Daily Valdez, Lexie Valdez, Shayda Valdez and Danli Valdez. She had two great-great-grandsons, Kyler Castillo and Landon Worley.
She will be missed by family and friends and she will always stay in our hearts. A piece of her, through her artwork, will stay with us forever.
