Born Sept. 23, 1931, in Queens N.Y., Betty strode the Big Apple and eventually met the love of her life, Edward Mergens; they never looked back — raising their two sons, Michael and Stephen, and daughter, Stacy. Together, the family moved across the U.S. and the world sharing marvelous experiences and making memories for a lifetime.

Betty was a strong, confident woman who spoke her mind and made lasting friends at every stage of her life. She was a great bridge player, an accomplished investor and a passable golf player and skier, but she really excelled as a friend, wife, mother and grandmother. She introduced us all to the marvel that is the Colorado Rockies when she “decided” for our father that they needed to build a house in Pagosa Springs. Her decision established us all as avid Wolf Creek skiers — a sport we all relish and continue to enjoy. She is survived by her three children and five grandchildren: PJ Shumway, Stephanie Shumway, Christina Mergens, Matthew Mergens and Iris Daunt-Withers.

Betty will be missed and never forgotten by the long trail of friends she left in her wide wake through this world.

Funeral Mass followed by internment is scheduled for 11 a.m. Jan. 23, 2019, at Pope John Paul II Catholic Church, 353 S. Pagosa Blvd.
