Special to The PREVIEW

On Friday, Sept. 28, at 10:30 a.m., the Literary Ladies Book Club will discuss “Before We Were Yours” by Lisa Wingate.

The book is based on a major scandal that existed from the 1930s to 1950s at the Tennessee Children’s Home Society orphanage in Memphis, Tenn., run by the director, Georgia Tann. Tann, with connections with the police, hospital nurses and other politicians, kidnapped and sold poor children to wealthy families all over the country. A young privileged attorney, Avery Stafford, after an encounter with a nursing home resident who looks like her grandmother, decides to seek answers to her family’s long hidden history.

Wingate is a former journalist and has won many awards, including the Pat Conroy Southern Book Prize and this novel was on the New York Times Bestseller list.

We are looking forward to seeing you this Friday.
