He and his wife, Joan, were with friends on a multiday rafting trip through the beautiful Idaho wilderness when Jerry suffered a fatal fall while fly-fishing in the rugged terrain along the Salmon River.

The Rohwers were business owners in Pagosa Springs, operating Moonlight Books for 25 years. In addition, Jerry worked with the town police department as an animal control officer for 24 years. He saw the need for and lobbied for a dog park near the river south of town. Over the years, many people and their dogs met him along the River Walk, in the town parks and on Reservoir Hill.

Jerry leaves behind Joan Rohwer, his wife of 47 years, and their son, Tobi Rohwer; Tobi’s family: wife Alison and daughters Grace and Emery, of Pagosa Springs; Jerry’s nephew, Ryan Perry and his family: wife Jodi, and children Hailey and Aiden, of Rio Rancho, N.M.; Jerry’s sister, Kay Zillich, and her son, William, of Durango, Colo. Jerry also leaves behind numerous colleagues at the Pagosa Springs Police Department and Town Hall, as well as dear friends, neighbors and children he loved to entertain. He was recently preceded in death by his son, Shadd Rohwer, of Aztec, N.M., and father Robert Rohwer, of Santa Fe, N.M. Both passed in January 2018.

Jerry treasured his family and his role as grandfather to Grace and Emery and granduncle to Hailey and Aiden. His grandchildren will remember him as a patient explainer of things and a grandpa who could make an adventure out of anything and who was always there to hold a hand — or sneak you a cookie. His passions included exploring wild country, chasing wild trout and floating wild rivers. He left this world doing what he loved; however, those of us remaining agree that he left us too soon.

The family is planning a small, informal memorial; date to be determined. Condolences can be sent to Joan Rohwer at P.O. 1294, Pagosa Springs.
