Smoke is in the air in Archuleta County today, with the cause of the smoke believed to be two separate fires burning in New Mexico and Arizona.

Archuleta County Director of Emergency Management Mike Le Roux explained that it was his understanding that a fire larger than 10,000 acres was currently burning west of Albuquerque, N.M.

“We have a huge fire in the Coconino National Forest outside of Payson in Arizona putting out a lot of smoke,” Le Roux said. “Obviously with the wind we got yesterday, it’s blowing a ton of that up our way.”

Continued Le Roux, “There’s two fires, one in New Mexico and one in Arizona and that’s what’s putting that smoke up in our region.”
