Did you know that the leading cause of blindness worldwide is cataracts?

Cataracts are the most common cause of vision loss for individuals over the age of 40. In fact, according to Prevent Blindness America, there are more cases worldwide of this lens-clouding condition than glaucoma, macular degeneration and diabetic retinopathy combined.

Cataracts are opacities or blind spots in the lens of the eye that progress dramatically as we age. More than half of all Americans older than 65 have cataracts to some degree. Cataracts take months, or even years, to fully form, resulting in blurred vision and, if left untreated, they can result in blindness.

Since 2000, cataract prevalence has climbed 22 percent. Other ocular maladies have also risen. The incidence of macular degeneration has increased by 25 percent, diabetic retinopathy by almost 90 percent and glaucoma by 19 percent.

Dr. Jon Zissman, OD, is providing free vision screenings. Come to Pagosa Springs High School April 28 from 7 to 11 a.m.

The Pagosa Springs Town Council will proclaim its support of 9Health Fair at its meeting today, April 19.

There will also be eyeglass recycling through Lions Club at the health fair. Imagine you could help a child read. Increase community health and wellness and make a real difference by bringing your used eyeglasses.

Come to the high school on April 28 between 7 and 11 a.m. There will be a minimal cost blood test panel for $35, free screenings and education opportunities.

Lifesaving tests and assessments are a great way to ward off potential problems.

Volunteers have a special time and date set aside for their tests and some vouchers are available, too.

We need greeters, volunteer today. Contact Constance: text/call (813) 373-8004 or email 7LawsofHealth@gmail.com.
