Catherine Rose Lewis-Martinez, aged 78, passed away peacefully at her home in Pagosa Springs on Sept. 3. Catherine was born Jan. 30, 1939, in Galena, Kansas, to Artie Pearl and Otto Lewis.

Catherine thoroughly enjoyed writing poetry, gardening, painting, working with clay, sewing, knitting, crocheting and many other crafting activities. Catherine’s greatest joy was spending time with her children and grandchildren.

In addition to raising her five children, Catherine owned a craft business called Country Rose Crafts. She made several of her own doll patterns and was very proud her “heritage doll” was displayed in the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, D.C. Catherine was also very active with her community 4-H club, Shady Pines. She was a 4-H leader teaching cooking, knitting and sewing. Catherine reigned as the 2014 County Fair Lady.

Catherine was preceded in death by her husband, Manual “Tony” Martinez; her parents; her two brothers, Pat Lewis and Arvil James Lewis; and her sister, Ethel Fitzhugh. She is survived by her children: James Fredricks and wife Sheila Fredricks, of Espanola, N.M.; Joseph Boyet and wife Rosemary Boyet, of Espanola, N.M.; Carmen Boyet-Salazar and husband Juan Salazar, of Rio Rancho, N.M.; Antoinette Martinez-Randall and husband Mitch Randall, of Pagosa Springs; and Jeremy Martinez, of Pagosa Springs. She is also survived by her grandchildren: Shannon Laroche (Miguel Laroche), Jayme Fredricks, Samantha Fredricks, Jaymes Maes, Monique Hinojos (Santino Hinojos), Jozette Boyet (Reece Griego), Tyrel Smith, Mariah Salazar and Catherine Randall. And, finally, she is survived by her great-grandchildren: Isaiah Laroche, Alayna Laroche, Lillyana Laroche, Alexis Garcia, Mya Hinojos, Kayden Hinojos and Mila Mai Griego.

Catherine’s services will be Sept. 30 at 10 a.m. at Pope John Paul II Catholic Church, Pagosa Springs.
