Mathiason James Maestas

Posted

April 10, 1976, Mathiason James Maestas was born to Jeanette Gomez and Steven Maestas, joined the Heavenly Father Sept. 17. Mathiason joins family who left before him: maternal grandparents Mary Martinez and Tomas Martinez; uncle Leonard Martinez and cousin Willie Martinez; paternal grandparents Isaac and Miguelita Maestas; uncle Albert Maestas; and cousin Michael Maestas.

He leaves behind his loving parents, Jeanette Gomez (Jeff Bayze); Steven Maestas (Irma Woody); and stepfather James Gomez.

His siblings include not only his best friend, but his sister as well, Leanne Maestas (Jermaine Jones); stepbrother Robert Gomez (Katherine); and stepsisters Janissa Gomez Hightower and Bethany Woody. Mathiason absolutely adored the many aunts and uncles he was blessed to have. And what’s better than aunts and uncles but your cousins, and he had so many of them. The love for all of them will never end. Now he loved his family but his pride and joy came from watching his precious nephews, LeAndre Maestas, Michael, Dialo, Joshua Jones and Anthony Gomez.

Can’t forget Tio’s princesses Eliyanah and Sharae Jones and Annalise Gomez, all grow into amazing and loving individuals. Mathiason resided in Pagosa Springs, where he attended school. He grew up with a lot of great family and friends. His Pagosa friends know all too well his love for them and he knew theirs for him. He left a mark everywhere he lived including his many years of living in (Burque) Albuquerque, N.M. That whole city and in between to all around he was loved and known. If you truly knew him, you knew his love for Harley Davidsons. His heart melted hearing the rumbling beauty of an iron beast. He longed for the freedom he felt on one. He knew he looked good on one, too. Under all the tattoos and toughness was a man of kindness and loyalty. All Mathiason ever wanted was to help every and anyone. His heart so big and loving you can’t help but to love his ability to have made each one of us laugh hysterically. Nothing but great memories of a great man.

Rosary is being held at Pope John Paul II Thursday, Sept. 28, at 6 p.m. The funeral will also be held at the same place Friday, Sept. 29, at 10 a.m. with Catholic burial to follow at Hilltop Cemetery. Lunch will be served at the Parish Hall downtown next to IHM Catholic Church.
