Town to evaluate sandwich board signs in historic district

At the recommendation of Planning Director James Dickhoff, Town Council approved a resolution at its meeting on Jan. 21 directing the Historic Preservation Board to conduct a survey of merchants in the town’s historic district focused on the use of sandwich board advertising and the possible elimination of its use.

Dickhoff advised that sandwich boards are currently permitted by applicable regulations, but noted that their multiplicity in the historic district and other factors impairing freedom of pedestrian movement on sidewalks, such as stairways providing private building access and tree wells, have combined to create hazardous conditions.
