Special to The PREVIEW

The purpose of the Earth Community’s book discussions is to help us have accurate knowledge and understanding of what is going on in the world.

We all know how large some corporations have become, but we are not always aware of how much power they are exerting to achieve their financial success, sometimes at the expense of us, the consumers. That is why we are studying David Korten’s book, “When Corporations Rule the World.”

Our discussion for Monday, Dec. 28, will be all of Part III which is titled “Corporate Colonialism.” We can all remember the excitement of studying in school about 13 American colonies. Now we will look at 13 American corporations and see how they managed to take over the world.

We will be meeting at the Visitor Center conference room on Hot Springs Boulevard at 2:30 p.m. The discussion lasts as long as the participants choose. At the end, the next reading assignment and meeting time are decided. We invite both people who have read the book and those who are interested in discussing the concepts to attend.

The Earth Community at Pagosa Springs is dedicated to finding sustainable ways to live that do not harm our planet and provide successful lives for all people. We are working on a formal mission statement to be formulated in January. We are also taking suggestions for our next book study.

You can still become a founding member of a group of people who want to change the world, by starting with ourselves in Pagosa Springs.
