Special to The SUN

This Saturday, Dec. 5, is the third annual Sweaty Santa Fun Run/Walk. Local charity GECKO (Giving Every Child Knowledge of the Outdoors) stages this fun community event to encourage Pagosa Springs’ residents and tourists to get outside for a great cause.

The event is open to all ages and abilities, and families are welcome to participate together.

The Sweaty Santa is a noncompetitive, untimed fun run, jog or walk and starts at 10 a.m. at the Ross Aragon Community Center parking lot. Distances are 3k (2 miles) and 5k (3 miles) out and back with scenic mountain vistas.

Festive Christmas dress is welcome.

Baby joggers, strollers, scooters and dogs on leashes are allowed if you’re walking. Get some fresh air on this downtown route that will be held snow or shine (bring your snowshoes if you need to).

Of course, as a GECKO event, you’ll enjoy a memorable time with the following festive activities: famous GECKO Christmas stocking ornament medals made by the Pagosa Springs Elementary School art class awarded to all finishers; warm yourself with delicious hot coffee and Christmas cookies; have your photo taken with a not-so-sweaty Santa and his elf and end your race with refreshments at the finish line.
