Shop locally for the freshest produce

Posted

It doesn’t get any better than this. It’s that great time of year when peaches are in from Palisade, corn is fresh from Olathe and homegrown tomatoes, fresh greens and all kinds of produce grown right here in Archuleta County are fresh from the garden. And nothing smells better than the aroma of Hatch chiles being roasted right on site or looks more tantalizing than fresh-baked pies, breads and pastries.

To add to the ambiance of a beautiful Saturday morning in Pagosa is the sound of local musicians as you stroll around the farmers market, purchasing locally made cheeses, organic eggs and homemade tamales.

If you have driven through town on Saturday morning, you couldn’t help but notice the crowd at the farmers market. Shopping locally not only supports the local economy, but offers consumers the freshest food (often picked that morning) and a choice of locally grown vegetables that haven’t been shipped from farms thousands of miles away.

Here are a few tips to help you enjoy the many flavorful offerings of our local farmers’ market:

• Go early for the best selection.

• Check out all the booths before making your choices.
