Volleyball season is in full swing, and according to coach Connie O’Donnell, the team is already presenting a united front.

The team went 19-8 last season and 6-2 in league play. O’Donnell said the team is going into the new season with a lot of good experience and energy.

There are a total of 34 student athletes participating in the volleyball program this year.

Varsity is made up of 10 girls, six of which are seniors. The team also includes two juniors and two sophomores.

O’Donnell said the team already exhibits impressive leadership skills, and that the girls are willing to help in anyway they can, whether or not they are starting for the team.

The girls have been practicing voluntarily twice a week throughout the summer, and began formal practices on Aug. 17.

Last week, they played their first scrimmage on their home court, and O’Donnell was impressed with the team’s display.

“It was really encouraging,” she said, “We played a faster-paced game than we have before.”

In addition, O’Donnell is glad to see the team is looking at the big picture for the season, without any disagreements among teammates.

Varsity starters include LaShae Smith, Megan Farrah, Faith Ahlhardt, Madi Lewis and Taylor Jones.

The team is rounded out by Remy Oney, Miah Pitcher, Lauren Fortney, Niki Taylor and Morgan Lewis.

The team will play its first regular season game tonight (Thursday, Aug. 27) at 6 p.m. against the Farmington High School Scorpions.

The game is nonconference and will take place in Farmington. Last season, the Pirates beat the Scorpions 3-0.
