Town suggests collaboration with county on parks and recreation maintenance

The idea of using personnel and equipment from the Pagosa Springs Parks and Recreation Department to take care of parks owned by Archuleta County was introduced at a joint work session between the two governmental entities Tuesday morning.

Town Manager Greg Schulte explained that the town’s Parks and Recreation Commission met with the county’s Parks, Recreation, Open Spaces and Trails (PROST) task force on June 9 and had “a long and robust conversation” about the possibility of collaboration.

Schulte referred to several surveys both the town and the county have conducted over the years — including three questions on last November’s ballot — all of which indicate the community feels strongly that parks and recreation is a high priority.

“It’s what we are,” Schulte pointed out. “We are an outdoor community. This is part of why we are an attraction to tourists and why a lot of people come here, because of the outdoor lifestyle and the recreation lifestyle that we have.”
