Special to The PREVIEW

At the conclusion of Arthur Post’s 13th and final season as music director of the San Juan Symphony (SJS) last April, the board of directors unanimously voted to name him music director laureate. The 2015-16 season will feature a music director search for the fifth artistic head of the SJS.

The Durango Civic Symphony in Durango merged with the San Juan Symphony in Farmington in 1986 with Jan Roshong at the helm. Following Roshong’s death in 1996, Steven Smith was hired as conductor. When Smith left for a post with the Cleveland Orchestra, Bernard Rubenstein was hired, staying until 2000.

The San Juan Symphony undertook a national conductor search after Rubenstein’s departure. Following a year of guest conductors, Arthur Post accepted the position. The orchestra has flourished under Post’s guidance, programming a wide range of repertoire, continuing to improve the level of artistry and increasing its educational programs.
