Pagosa stars as major setting in new thriller

“The End of Summer” by Irving Munro begins in Austin, Texas, when a beautiful woman’s dead body is discovered beside a pool. It is 2005 and the investigation into her murder goes nowhere. Fast forward to 2014, when a retired detective named Bill Ross is hired as a volunteer special reserve officer and this cold case is reopened.

Suddenly progress is made — and the Pagosa connection becomes important. In fact, Pagosa becomes the setting for a major part of the plot about halfway through the book. Local readers and visitors will enjoy references to places in our community that are familiar to us all. As well, Detective Sgt. Jacob Beach of the Archuleta County Sheriff’s Office is thanked in the acknowledgments because Munro says he was very helpful in early plot creation and reading of the first draft. Both The Pagosa Springs SUN and the Pagosa Daily Post are referenced in the story.

This is a fast-paced crime story with realistic dialogue, well-crafted characters and a believable plotline. The pleasant writing style results in an easy, enjoyable read.

Born in Scotland and now living in Austin, Munro uses his lifetime experiences well in this story. You also can tell he admires the outdoor life of our little mountain town, including our great fishing opportunities.
