The Northern New Mexico Senior Men’s Golf Association held its annual championship this year in South Fork, at the Rio Grande Golf Club. There were 87 participants in a total of five flights.

The two-day tournament was held on a Tuesday and Wednesday, Aug. 26 and 27. Tuesday’s play was a shotgun event that was played in the afternoon under overcast skies and cool, rain-threatening conditions. The second day format had groups playing with tee times beginning in the morning hours. This day had a mixture of fall-like conditions that switched often from strong winds to drizzle, from rain to sunny skies, with “jacket switching” warm, cool and cold temperatures.

Scores for this tournament were cumulative for the two days of play. The ever-changing weather, combined with very difficult rough anywhere off the fairway, was a challenge for all players.

Three Pagosans had success. Roger Betts, in the second flight, had a most respectable score on the first day of play, with the second a little less, but was rewarded as the first net winner. Buzz Burke, competing in the championship flight, had a couple rounds of unfamiliar play, yet garnered “Closest to the Pin” on hole 14 on Wednesday. A foursome in the fourth flight, unfamiliar with Colorado fall-like weather conditions, decided to withdraw from the tournament on Wednesday when strong winds and rain made play a challenge. In this flight, after seemingly scrambling out of trouble both days, Ken Bailey won second gross.
