Defendants seek new attorneys with mixed results

It was supposed to be the day Mark Franklin Trail was sentenced for his involvement in a 26-hour standoff in downtown Pagosa Springs in the fall of 2012.

Instead, it was the day 6th Judicial District Court Judge Gregory Lyman appointed a new attorney to represent Trail, who had expressed discontent with his current legal team to the court.

When Trail’s case was called Tuesday morning, attorney Zach Brown, of the public defender’s office, informed the court that Trail had stated his wish to proceed by representing himself, but that the defense team could not withdraw from the case without permission of the court.
