Special to The PREVIEW

Seniors, a special invitation is yours for lunch tomorrow. That’s when Archuleta Seniors, Inc. (ASI) will observe the transition of management of the Senior Center from the county government to ASI with a celebration. Balloons, streamers — come join the party! This is all happening on Friday, Jan. 3. As usual, lunch will be served, starting with salads, at 11:30 a.m. The main menu will feature chicken fried steak and all the trimmings. Live music will be provided by the San Juan Mountain Boys, beginning at 10:30 a.m. and continuing until 1:30 p.m. The suggested donation for lunch will be $4 for seniors over 60, or those married to seniors over 60. For guests, the charge is $10. Just remember that reservations are required for a meal. Please call Cheryl Wilkinson at 264-0773, or Becky Herman at 903-0788 Thursday or before 9 a.m. Friday to make your reservations, since the old phone number for making reservations may not be operational by then. In addition, if you need help with transportation, please mention this to Cheryl or Becky when you call.

While you’re at the senior center, please talk to any board member (they will all have big name tags) about any services, activities, classes, etc. that you would like to see offered. ASI can’t promise that all your requests will be filled, but we will promise that we will do our very best to offer what you need and want in your senior center.

One change that you might enjoy will be the extended hours that the center will be open. As a rule, the dining room will open at 10 a.m. Come early for coffee and to meet with friends for a chat, to play a game, or to have an informal meeting. We intend to provide this space for the greater part of the day for whatever activities appeal to you. Some will be planned; others will, we hope, be spontaneous. Let’s see what happens and go from there. Your ideas will be our guide. By the way, the dining room will close at 4 p.m. Monday through Wednesday and at 3:30 p.m. on Friday. As is currently the case, the dining room will be closed on Thursdays unless there are specific requests to use the space.

ASI wants to assure the community that current senior services will continue without interruption. As we “get our feet on the ground,” we plan to expand educational and entertainment programs and activities for seniors, when and if our resources permit.

ASI welcomes suggestions — and, by the way, the suggestion box will be checked every week, and, if you sign your name to your suggestion, we will get back to you about your request. Exciting times lie ahead for our senior center. Join us!
