The Archuleta County Democratic Party (ACDP) will sponsor its annual Chili Supper and Chili Cookoff on Thursday, Oct. 3, at the Ross Aragon Community Center.

This fun and tasty event is the major fund-raising event of the year for the ACDP. Tickets are $8 for adults, $4 for children under 12.

The supper begins at 6 p.m. The menu will include a variety of chili, vegetarian and non-vegetarian, with all of the trimmings; salad; cornbread from Pagosa Baking Company; coffee and soft drinks; and ice cream sundaes. A cash bar with beer and wine will be available. Donations of crockpots of chili are welcome and should be delivered by 5 p.m. Attendees will vote for their favorite chili and a prize will be awarded to the winner.

This year, the ACDP will host three featured speakers. John Stulp is the special policy advisor to Gov. Hickenlooper for water issues and director of the Interbasin Compact Committee (IBCC). The Interbasin Compact Committee (IBCC) was established by the Colorado Water for the 21st Century Act to facilitate conversations among Colorado’s river basins and to address statewide water issues. Stulp has been a county commissioner in Prowers County, a candidate for governor, and a member of other boards and commissions, including the State Board of Agriculture and the State Wildlife Commission. Stulp will speak on critical water issues, which are so important to the dry southwest and Archuleta County.

The second speaker is Rep. Mike McLachlan of the 59th House District. In 1965, McLachlan enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps, eventually serving in Vietnam. A 38-year resident of La Plata County, he has been both prosecutor and La Plata County attorney. In 1999, then-Attorney Gen. Ken Salazar appointed McLachlan as Colorado’s Solicitor General. It was in this role that Mike successfully argued the constitutionality of Colorado’s women’s health clinic shield law before the U.S. Supreme Court.

Last, but not least, the ACDP will welcome County Commissioner Clifford Lucero. A native of Pagosa Springs, Lucero is in his second term as commissioner, serving as chair for much of that time. He is the owner of a small business and has been active in community causes for many years, particularly those involving youth.
