Staff Writer

The Columbine Ranger District is proposing thinning and using a prescribed burn across 13,646 acres in the HD Mountains west of Bayfield, including the Sauls Creek, Armstrong Canyon and Fosset Gulch areas.

“The proposed action is to use a combination of mechanical treatment, hand treatment, and prescribed fire … in order to move the project area towards the desired conditions,” the district’s press release states.

The district is seeking public comments about the proposal now through July 18. Information about the project can be retrieved at www.fs.usda.gov/goto/sanjuan/projects, or by calling Craig Sullivan, project leader, at 884-1422.

Comments may be submitted in writing to the Columbine District Ranger, P.O. Box 439, 67 Pearl St., Bayfield, CO 81122, or via email to comments-rocky-mountain-san-juan-columbine@fs.fed.us.
