$1,000 reward

Dear Editor:

On the night of Dec. 22, or early morning of Dec. 23, we lost our beloved pet, companion, and family member of 12 years. Luke, a ragdoll cat, was full of love and comfort to whomever he came in contact with. He was murdered in our backyard using a compound bow with a setup that is designed for killing large mammals like elk. This crime occurred downtown in the alleyway south of Hwy. 160 at 2nd Street.

Research shows a direct correlation between animal cruelty and escalated violence. Seventy percent of people who commit violent crimes against animals also have records for other crimes, show a lack of remorse and are five times more likely to commit violent crimes against people.

It is for these reasons that we are offering a $1,000 reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the person or persons responsible for Luke’s death. Please call the Pagosa Police Department with any information you may have on this senseless act of violence.

There has been an outcry of support from friends and strangers throughout our community. Thank you for your caring thoughts.
